A Note From BOX's Chief Executive Officer: Arthur Gruen
In a recent meeting, Benji reminded me of an idea I once expressed that is very timely. The Scottish proverb “shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations” describes the cycle of families starting with little means who build their wealth through hard work, but by the time great-grandchildren are in charge, the family is back to where they started, with nothing. This cycle of wealth is a phenomenon that has been observed throughout history. It starts with the first generation, who typically accumulates wealth through hard work and determination. The second generation then takes over, tasked with maintaining the wealth created by the first generation. However, the third generation, often referred to as the squanderer, tends to waste the wealth created by their predecessors. This cycle can repeat itself indefinitely, leading to the downfall of wealthy families.
Entitlement is considered one of the major causes of this downfall. Generation three may conduct themselves with a sense of entitlement and may not dedicate the effort and work ethic necessary to maintain the earlier generations’ wealth. They may also make poor decisions, assuming that their previous generations successes will always be there to bail them out. One of the suggestions on how to avoid this is to instill a sense of responsibility and work ethic in later generations. One way to do this is by guiding generation three to look forward instead of looking back and instilling within them the sense that they are not the end of something great, but rather he beginning of something even greater.
So, regarding our business activities, let's see ourselves as first-generation builders because relative to our future, we're just getting started. As spring approaches and we look at everything around us growing, let's take that inspiration and not just rest on the laurels of the status quo. Let's see ourselves as first-generation builders and put in that extra umph.
Wishing our staff and partners a successful and prosperous Q2!
